  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Michael G Kurilla -- Size matters : H G Wells' The Food of the Gods and How it Came to Earth is the tale of a mysterious food substance (although Wells never provides any explanation for what is how or how it is produced) that makes living things grow to many times their normal size. While the inventor tries to conduct some legitimate experiments with the intention of growing larger animals for agricultural purposes, things get out of hand with giant plants, insects, and pests causing mayhem. The real problems begin when some infants are fed the stuff. What transpires is public fear, political backlash, and violence. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Papa Place -- Every Advance Has Its Drawbacks : This story parallels a lot of things going on today even though it was written in 1962. It parallels genetically modified organisms and manipulation of the natural order of things. It's a cautionary tale about messing with things we don't fully understand and the results from this. Just because we can do something doesn't always mean that we should. It's a forerunner of cloning and trying to create superhuman people. Wells was quite the visionary and used his Sci-Fi to warn and predict coming trends. I've read a lot of Wells stories and I liked this one a lot. Wells brand of Sci-Fi is intelligent well thought out and interesting. I read his works extensively but I didn't know about this one but im glad I came across this. If you like intelligent interesting Sci-Fi then you'll love this. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Food of Social Change : H.G. Wells is a writer of his time. His thinking is scientifically unsound from a modern standpoint but it represents very well the fears and hopefulness of his generation. As such, the writing style itself may appear bland, slow-moving, or pretentious. This is not a failing in the book but in the reader. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2011 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from SG -- Interesting concept : The food of the gods is unleashed onto an unsuspecting world. Things grow to enormous size including plants, insects, rats, and children. What follows is the inevitable-war. The book was good, a little wordy to get the story told in my opinion. The concept is one we can apply to today. With all the genetically modified foods and animals, maybe scientists need to stop before they introduce new things into nature and think what the ramifications of their actions could be. It is possible that the end result could be war and destruction. H.G. Wells shows once again that he was born way before his time. He had the ability to see far into the future and has a deep awareness of human nature. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Really pleased to read this book. One of Wells' best and most currently relevant. : I picked this book for my 12th grade Brit Lit class to read, since all of them pretty much knew Time Machine, War of the Worlds, etc. Especially nice was the current cultural references to genetically modified food. The book doesn't seem out of date at all. Well-written. The students loved it, and were surprised to enjoy "old stuff." I loved it. Great stuff. We had many interesting discussions. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from calamity carol -- H.G. Wells never disappoints : So pleased to get "The Food of the Gods". H.G. Wells was well ahead of his time with writing SF. Treasured my paperback copy and now find it easier to read on my tablet. Not yet read "How it came to earth" but looking forward to doing so soon. Thank you. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Classic science fiction at its best. : One of the great science fiction writers of yesteryear, and Food Of The Gods is one of his great classic works, though somewhat more along the lines of the Isle Of Doctor Moreau.
