The Virginia Dynasty: Four Presidents and the Creation of the American Nation Customer Reviews

:
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from wcw -- A quadruple biography of four Founders : Dr. Cheney is the first to point out that her doctorate is in English and not history. So, that being the case, "The Virginia Dynasty" is not deeply-researched history for academics, but a well-crafted historical tale for the layman. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JES -- A very readable and deeply interesting book. : This is probably Lynne Cheney's best work -- I cannot put it down and it brings into focus some of the people and personalities that contributed to the formation of our country. I have learned so much from reading this book. Well done, indeed. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jerry L. Martin -- a historical page-turner : This is a masterpiece of historical story-telling. Cheney manages to tell the story of a half-century of our nation's history through the close-up personal reactions and interactions, character strengths and short-comings, loves found and loves lost, friendships firm and friendships broken of four of our nation's founders, who all lived within what we would call driving-distance of each other. Always focusing on particular incidents with vivid detail, she manages still to convey the larger action taking place as a new nation is founded and secures its footing. I learned many things I had never read anywhere else. It is almost as if we were all sitting around the fireplace and hearing the stories told by someone who had been there. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Paul -- Fine writing style and research to back it up : I enjoyed the book. It was easy to read and provided some new information for me. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Cody Aubin -- Good read, but with a glaring oversight : An overall well written and informative book, though a bit too effusive of Jefferson, in my opinion. However, there was one glaring oversight that would lead an unaware reader to draw an incorrect conclusion of very important historic events. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Philip Seib -- Thoughtful, accessible history. : This is another fine book from Lynne Cheney. As with her biography of James Madison, Cheney offers comprehensive research and excellent writing. This time, she presents a group biography of four of the first five American presidents, all of whom were born in Virginia within a 60-mile radius. The monumental task of building a nation is well described, as is the lasting scar of slavery. Perhaps most striking is the fundamental selflessness of these men. Country came first. Contrast that with today's politicians. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Brennan -- The making of the United States. : A very well written book that is an easy read. It examines the relationship between the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Presidents, their friendships, although they did not always agree. It was enlightening to read of their thoughts behind their actions. Hamilton's involvement with all four is also covered and while not a friend of any of them not all of his ideas were ignored. It also highlights that politicking is not a modern phenomena. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Factual and balanced : Factual and balanced. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles Roy -- Très bon livre : Bonne collection, anglais facile. ( Reviewed in Canada on January 30, 2021 )
